Whitetail down low?

Took the wife on a jeep ride Saturday and came across 5 deer on the trail. Now get this, they were coues deer and when I hit the elevation on the gps we were at 2300 ft. Never seen them this low. All were mature whitetails. Have seen lots of mulies in this area but never whitetails before.
