I haven't hunted Mulies in this state for more than 15 years. When I used to hunt them, we'd always hunt 18B on the 7UP Ranch.

I'd like to get my daughter onto her first buck seeing as she killed her first elk last fall in Colorado and now has hunting in her blood. 18B was always an easy unit to hunt, but access to the 7UP is not obtainable due to new ownership.

Can anyone give me some ideas where to put her in for? She hates hiking but loves the hunt. To me the two go hand in hand. She's a good shot, 350+ is no problemo for her young eyes.

Aren't those Juniors-only hunts?

I was thinking about buying the Kaibab stamp and putting her in for The Strip. The hiking ain't too bad up there last I remember, but then again it's been since 1983 since I was last in 12A and 12B.

Shooting a Coues white tail is like shooting your neighbor's cocker spaniel. Awefully small target when the average shot is somewhere near 300 yards so I am told.

I'd rather start my daughter out easy, then later let her graduate to the more difficult hunt. Besides, 36-39 are some rough terrain to have a 14 year old girl hike through.

Talked to someone who also ranches in 18A and 18B about any deer. They told me they are scarce. Haven't seen many Mulies in a few years now. Numbers are way down. There's a ton of them around Horseshoe and Bartlett Lakes, but the hiking for her wouldn't be nice. She'd probably swear off hunting forever.

the 12 units are the strip they are the best to kill a big buck but the draw success is really low. the 13's is the kiabab and there is a little bit better success rate to draw a tag there. There is some really good hunting in the 13's. If you want to kill a pig hunt the 12's if you want a decent deer and want to actually draw a tag go for the 13's.

I believe LS has it backwards......the 12 units are the Kaibab.....13B & A are the Strip units.

With those hunts being mid November, what is the probability of snow closing access at Jacob's Lake?

Also thought about unit 21, easy terrain for a youngster to hunt.

Not looking for a trophy, I can get that in Colorado.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I can't help you with 21, but I've hunted north of the ditch several times. In November, it can be hit or miss in terms of weather. Some years there's enough snow to push deer down past the oak / jumiper zone and into the bitterbrush areas.......while other years they'll still be up in the pines on the plateau.

If there's enough snow, the Highway from Jacobs Lake toward the North Rim will close.....however that is not the norm. There are other dirt access points though (mainly FS 422). If there's enough snow to close the Highway, you're in for a great hunt, as the deer will be in the lower country. Hope it helps.
