First let me introduce myself, my name is not Hot nor is it Carl. Its Andrew Van Allen, im 21 years old, go to ASU and work and I love to hunt and fish.
My brother Brian and I got drawn for any antlered deer- rifle in 37B. We had the general area in mind that we wanted to hunt so that what we stuck with come opening day. Opening day was Nov. 9th, man was it hot!! We spent the morning glassing the desert for a few hours and didnt see a single thing. After that we set up camp to get under the easy up for shade, didnt leave camp for most of the early afternoon. At around 3:45 Brian decided what direction he wanted to head in and we soon found ourselves in an awesome wash, drove down it for about a mile and came to a fence line. From there we walked a road that paralled the fenceline while we stopped and glassed. After walking in about a 1/4 mile we stopped, and Brian spotted a deer. Brian was sure it had antlers but didnt know how big, at this point we were about 500 yards from the deer and it was about 4:45. The deer was feeding on a ridge across a wash so we hurried across the wash in thick cover. We then slowly worked our way up a ridge, spotted the deer again and he hadnt moved far at all, at this point we were about 300 yards out but needed to get a little closer for a shot. We got to about 250 yards and had a shot, Brian let me take the shot as it would be my first deer(he was really holding out for "Big Daddy", a deer he and MattObertin saw earlier this year). So I set up for the shot, I had never been so shaky, even with shooting sticks. I tried to keep the crosshairs on the body and slowly squeezed the trigger. The rifle fired and Brian yelled "You got 'em". This deer just dropped and didnt move an inch. Shot was a little high, turned the lungs into jelly and broke his spine.
Not bad for my first deer, I was extremly happy. Turned out to be a nice 2x2, very symmetrical and 1 inch brow tines. 16 inch spread.
